ALTERANS – Thirteen students and two teachers from SMP Islam Al Azhar 13 Surabaya recently returned from a successful English Immersion Program at the International Islamic School Malaysia (IISM) in Kuala Lumpur. The program, which took place from February 16-24, 2025, offered participants a unique opportunity to explore the English language, cultural diversity, and valuable international experience.
The primary objectives of the immersion program were to enhance students’ proficiency in English, encourage its active use upon returning to Indonesia, and broaden their global perspective. By attending IISM, the students participated in classroom activities and cultural exchanges that enriched their understanding of language in a global context.
One of the key highlights was the “International Day” event, where the students had the opportunity to learn about different global traditions and customs. This celebration of diversity reinforced the importance of intercultural communication and the role of language as a bridge between cultures.
In addition to the educational sessions, the group also had the opportunity to explore some of the most famous tourist destinations in Kuala Lumpur and Singapore. Visits to landmarks like the iconic Petronas Twin Towers and Genting Highland in Malaysia as well as Gardens by the Bay, and the Merlion Statue in Singapore allowed the students to experience first-hand the vibrant multicultural atmosphere of these cities.
The program provided a memorable experience for both students and teachers alike. By immersing themselves in English-speaking environments and interacting with peers from different countries, the participants are expected to return with greater confidence in their language skills, a deeper appreciation for global diversity, and a renewed passion for learning.
“We are grateful for the chance to be part of this amazing program,” said Yoelius Ramadhan Pamungkas, one of the participating teachers. “It has been an invaluable experience for our students to improve their English and gain a broader understanding of the world.”
